Back in 2014, a series of protests were sparked around the country by the the police killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO on August 9th. At the time, I was living on one of the busiest streets in the city which leads up to the university campus, and has historically served as a gathering place for protests. I had just returned home when I heard chanting outside so I grabbed my camera and headed out. Knowing that police encounters with protestors don't always end so peacefully, I was dedicated to documenting as much as I could. This was the first large demonstration that I was aware of and many more followed. I spent hours following protestors for miles throughout Oakland and Berkeley, captured video of people being tackled for no discernable reason, I was tear gassed, captured people hit in the back by rubber bullets or beanbags, all to make sure people could see what was really happening. My dedication to documenting the events eventually led to my arrest with dozens of others in December 2014, though charges were never filed (it's not uncommon for journalists covering protests to be arrested). I eventually compiled the photos and wrote a piece recalling the events and the history behind them. A few days later I was at work, and much to my surprise, my boss came up to me and said he had found my post online, and reading it had made him re-think some of his long-held beliefs.

It was a very small moment, but knowing that my dedication to photography and documentation was able to sway someone was very meaningful to me and it has stuck with me since.
